What Does it Mean to be a Light in a Dark Place?
To be a light in a dark place is to be a vessel for God’s goodness to shine through you in any circumstance or situation. It means you have decided to give your life to Christ and be reborn in him so that he can navigate you to places unseen. It also means that you have taken on the task of bringing that light to places that are not so bright. In the bible, (Matt 5:13), Our savior calls his disciples the “salt of the earth”, and the “light of the earth”. What does this mean for you? Well, it means God calls us all to be the salt of the earth and a light to the world. In modern times the world has become a dark place. Like salt and light, we, God’s children, are to penetrate the darkness and bring flavor and brightness back to this fallen world. It can sound like a huge responsibility, and it is. But… God has equipped you for it.
In the bible, God says, “I knew you before I formed you in the womb, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” When God says this to Jeremiah in the bible, he speaks of the predestined course of Jeremiah’s life. This shows us, that just as God has a plan and a purpose for Jeremiah, he too has a plan for me and you. That plan is to be a light in this dark world and to edify Christ in all our ways. If you are reading this, God is calling you to be a light. Not just a dim light that lights up corners, but a bold light like the sun, that can light up the darkest sky. A light that can take a person suffering from depression to counting every circumstance as joy. A light that makes un-forgiveness wither away and love to fully bloom. A light that takes someone from unqualified to qualified by the Father in Heaven. This is not a sales pitch or a false gospel. This is me being a light by helping you uncover your own. This is me being obedient and showing up as a light while you navigate through this dark time on Earth. I hope that my light can help you recognize and embrace your own.
Here are 6 Steps to Becoming a Light for the Kingdom of God.
Step 1: Surrender to God…completely and know your “Why”! What has God assigned you to do in the Kingdom? When you know why God has called you, you recognize the importance of your light and impact. If you do not know why, then pray and ask God to reveal your “Why” to you.
Step 2: Take care of yourself first, then others… It is hard to be a light when your light is dim and dull. God wants us to honor our temple in mind, body, and spirit. This way, we can be filled and pour God’s love into others. Your ability to light the darkest room is dependent on the wattage of your heart!
Step 3: Take care of your environment (Soil). Your environment is like soil. The soil’s condition is what allows any plant to grow. As a light, you must make sure your soil grounds are fit to cultivate growth in your life and the life of others.
Step 4: Take care of your little. God calls us to steward what we have. If we neglect the little, we cannot expect to take care of more. In order to be a light, there is a requirement to have the capacity to do what God has called you to do. To increase your capacity, it must begin with honoring the small things as God prepares you for the big things.
Step 5: Serve others & give more than you receive. As a servant in the body of Christ, you are sprinkling your salt around the earth and shining your light upon the world. When you serve others, you expose them to the very light that helps them see a glimmer of hope for the future.
Step 6: Bring the light out in others. Start a fire. A fire is a light source that spreads when provoked. It is necessary to positively provoke a fire in each person you meet! By being a light and sharing your own, you inspire others to do the same. Imagine the light of God shining in us, through us, and around us. In the Kingdom of God, there is no competition just position, everyones light can shine without dimming another. This is how we bring light to a dark world!
Be a light in a dark place. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BRIGHT YOU SHINE!
